In arid landscapes like Boulder County, every storm matters. When rainfall runs off too quickly, it takes topsoil with it, and facilitates flooding and drying. Sky to Soil Systems designs and builds practical earthworks and perennial planting systems that slow and spread runoff, keeping more water in the soil for long-term productivity and resilience.
Because when soil holds water, irrigation needs drop, erosion drops, and land holds value longer.
Sky to Soil Systems is a Boulder County-based ecological engineering firm that rejuvenates working lands with soil-first water systems. We specialize in water-harvesting earthworks and diverse native plantings that increase infiltration, restore soil function, and protect properties from runoff, erosion, fire, flood and drought.
Sky to Soil Systems was founded in 2025 after years of watching rain and snowmelt run off working land across Boulder County. Season after season, runoff led to erosion, declining vegetative growth, and rising irrigation demands for local farms, ranches, and homesteads.
Instead of accepting those conditions as normal, our team began building low-cost, low-impact earthworks that use the existing shape of the land to improve infiltration and increase soil water-holding capacity. When paired with diverse perennial plantings, these systems help rehydrate soils, support biodiversity, and improve performance often within the first growing season.
Michael Bauer grew up in Indiana and Illinois in a family of conventional dairy and beef producers, along with truckers and heavy equipment operators. He moved to Colorado in 1996 to study ecology and engineering, building a foundation that connects living systems with technical problem-solving.
After years of land management and sustainable systems engineering work, Michael returned to farming and started building regenerative projects across Boulder County. Today, he continues to serve landowners who want practical solutions for erosion control, water retention, and healthier soil in an arid climate.
Stabilizing water movement is not cosmetic. It is a structural decision that affects soil health, productivity, and long-term land value.
Rain can either build your land or tear it down.
At Sky to Soil Systems, we design and build affordable earthworks and diverse plantings that slow, spread and sink rainfall quickly and effectively.
